In Aug 2007 Barack Obama said "As President, I will close Guantánamo, reject the Military Commissions Act and adhere to the Geneva Conventions." On Jan 2nd 2009, in one of his first statements as President, he signed an executive order to close the Detention Facility within one year.
Four and a half years later, it is still open. 164 prisoners remain in captivity there even though 86 of them have been cleared for release.
The majority of these men have suffered eleven years of indefinite detention without charge or trial, with no end to their imprisonment in sight.
